1. God is a Covenant Keeper: The Promise of the Father
Jesus talked about sending the Promise of the Father:
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” - Acts 1: 4-5
This scripture alludes to the time John the Baptist said in Luke 3:16:
John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with theHoly Spirit and fire.
This promise that Jesus was talking about is found in Joel 2:28-29:
“And it shall come to pass afterward
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
And also on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
And also on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
Notice that God says:
- "all flesh" -not just the spiritual, not just some, but on all
- When the Spirit is poured out, people will prophesy, have special dreams and see vision. When you have the baptism of the Holy Spirit, these are the things you can walk in. It's not just for special people!
2. Who is the Holy Spirit
Creator
Creator
"the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters. Then God said, 'let there be light'...
- Gen 1:2-3aThis is the first reference to the spirit of God in the whole Bible. Some translations use the word 'brooded' rather than 'hovered' - it conveys the sense of God thinking, imagining, planning, preparing for Creation. Notice that the first thing God did after 'brooding' is to start creating. The Holy Spirit is The Creator.
Helper
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
The word 'helper' is 'parakletos' in Greek, which means 'summoned', 'aide', 'pleader/ intercessor'. I like to think of it as 'wingman' - The Holy Spirit is our support always by your side ready to bring you what you need.- John 14:26
Spirit of Truth
But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
- John 15:26He is the Spirit of Truth. Jesus in John 14:6 said, 'I am the way, the truth and the life.
If Jesus is The Truth, and the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth, then they are one.
Col 2:9 - Jesus is the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
Next time - the Work of the Holy Spirit
